FAQs
What is physical therapy?
Physical therapy is a health care specialty involved with evaluating, diagnosing, and treating disorders of the musculoskeletal system. The ultimate goal of physical therapy is to restore maximal functional independence to each individual patient.
Do I need to see my doctor before coming in for physical therapy?
If you have been diagnosed sometime in the past for the condition that you seek treatment, you do not need to see your physician before coming in for physical therapy. The therapist may ask you to check back in with your doctor depending on their findings during your initial evaluation. If you seek treatment for a new injury, it is best to see your physician first in case further diagnostic testing (x-rays, MRI, etc.) is needed to clarify your diagnosis or rule out other pathology not related to the musculoskeletal system.
When my doctor refers me to physical therapy, what are my choices?
How do I know if Body Awareness Physical Therapy accepts my insurance plan?
What do I look for in a physical therapy facility?
- Is this facility in-network with my insurance?
- If it is not in-network, what is my approximate cost?
- Does the availability of appointment times/ days agree with my needs for scheduling?
- How many patients per hour is the therapist scheduled? This varies from a patient every 30min (which is our standard) to a patient every 15 minute, or 4 patients per hour.
- What is the ratio of treatment staff to patients? I.e. how many aides per therapist? If there is a low ratio of support staff, you may not get the proper amount of supervision during your treatments.
- Is this location convenient to my home or work?
How often would I need to go in for physical therapy?
Your treatment plan is developed by you, your physical therapist, and your physician. Your physician will typically send a referral slip with a requested number of visits per week and for how many weeks. Your physical therapist will help to determine the best course of care depending on your goals as well as financial and personal time constraints once you have been evaluated for your condition to ensure that your goals are attainable in a timely manner. Your physical therapist and physician remain in close communication throughout your care.
Will my health insurance cover physical therapy?
Most health insurance plans have some provision for physical therapy services. Some may require you to obtain a referral from a physician prior to beginning physical therapy. Physical therapy is usually listed under ancillary services. We do courtesy insurance verifications in house, but we also encourage the patient to call and check their individual benefits so they are clear on potential out of pocket costs. Cash rates are usually available as well.
