Our reputation is based on the high level of constant supervision our highly skilled staff provides to our patients. We understand you have many options for your rehabilitation, but we believe you will find the high quality of care and personal attention provided at Body Awareness Physical Therapy invaluable to your recovery.

Our physical therapists have extensive training in joint mobilization, myofascial and trigger point release, and functional progression to daily and sport activities using closed chain and dynamic stabilization techniques. We spend the time with our patients to assure specific muscle groups are being used correctly and in proper recruitment sequence. You will become an active participant in your care through education for maintenance and injury prevention. This allows you to gain maximum benefit from physical therapy and gives you the ability to maintain your function long after physical therapy ends.

What's in a Name?

The name Body Awareness Physical Therapy represents our intention for your experience in physical therapy. We believe that by helping you to increase the awareness of your own body (where it is in space and how it moves in space) through education, hands on treatment, and exercises designed specifically for you, you will be empowered by this knowledge and education of your own body.

You will have a clear picture of its strengths, weaknesses, and tendencies to fall out of alignment when fatigued or used improperly so that you may control your pain or discomfort rather than it controlling you.

We treat the body as a whole, meaning we look to find the cause of the problem so that long lasting function is obtained. We consider there to be phases of rehabilitation.

  • The first phase addresses the acute symptoms - decrease pain and discomfort.
  • The second phase is the rehabilitative phase that addresses the mechanical cause of your pain. For instance, did you know that your neck pain may actually be coming from poor positioning or mechanics of your shoulder/scapula? Now, you may indeed have stiffness and spasming in the region of the neck, but if the shoulder is not aligned optimally the muscles connecting your shoulder to your neck will pull the neck out of alignment to cause your pain. After all everything is connected. So if you do not align the shoulder and restore proper shoulder movements, your symptoms are likely to return.
  • The third phase is the phase of function. We develop your treatment plan with your goals in mind. We don't just give random strengthening exercises and send you on your way. If you want to return to surfing, then your exercises will have a component of retraining your body so that it remembers what to do while surfing. The same goes for gardening, walking or sitting at your computer.

Once you have Body Awareness you will have the tools to detect when something in your body is off before it becomes an injury. You will be able to make adjustments in your daily habits or work outs to see if you can correct the problem before having to seek treatment. Knowledge is power. Body Awareness is self empowerment.

About our logo...

Body Awareness Physical Therapy has a unique and rather detailed logo. It is an original design that my brother-in-law, an artist, came up with after I had given the name to my business to be.

The triangle signifies unity and balance. The eye located in the upper portion of the triangle symbolizes Awareness. The body in the lower left of the triangle is just that, The Body. The hand in the lower right of the triangle is the Healing Hand of Physical Therapy.

About Our Motto...

LOOK LISTEN FEEL

Look: In order to instill as sense of BODY AWARENESS you must first look at how your body is aligned. We often use visual tools to help our patients gain a sense of their postural alignment. If each segment is properly aligned there is little to no strain placed in your muscles and joints at rest or in movement. This results in longevity of the entire musculoskeletal system.

Listen: We ask that each patient listen to their body. Each of us has an "inner physician" that will tell you if a particular activity is going to hurt you. The body will tell you in the form of a feeling that you are unable to hold proper positioning due to fatigue, weakness, or perhaps instability. Those warning signs should not be ignored. Respect your BODY AWARENESS.

Feel: The goal for our patients is to be able to feel specific muscle recruitment patterns. It is important to be able to isolate muscle recruitment, properly sequence muscle groups, and to determine if you are performing the exercise properly. In order to gain BODY AWARENESS you must be able to feel how your body moves in space.
